Do you know?

Flu season is upon us, but as humans we are not the only ones who get sick. Our livestock pals can get sick too, from colds to stomach viruses. What can you do to help prevent a sickness spreading through your herd? Do you know your animal’s healthy internal temperature? These questions being answered may help you and your herd this season. Luckily, we are here to help.

Obviously, all animals are different. Here is a nifty chart to help you:

Now, these are all rectal temperatures. If you so happen to take the temperature at a different area on the animal and do not get a “safe range” reading, don’t fret. Simply clean the thermometer and try to take another reading, this time in the rectum.

To help keep your animals from getting sick here are a few things you can do:

-Feed BioMos as a supplement. This helps boost the immune system of the animal.

-Give your animals the proper supplements throughout the year.

-Make sure to have plenty of shelter so your animals can escape harsh weather.

These are just a few things that you can do to ensure your animals stay happy and healthy.

Rain Rot- What it is and how to treat it.

It’s officially the “rainy season”, and even though the rain is great, especially after a five year drought, it can cause some serious problems. Not only for you but for your animals as well.

One main problem is Rain Rot. Now, even though the rain itself is not the main culprit, it does help rain rot spread and essentially “grow”. Rain Rot is a bacterial infection on the skin, most commonly seen in horses. The rain obviously makes the horse wet for a prolonged period of time. This helps the bacteria grow in one of the most fertile breeding grounds. Here is a little diagram to help better understand how it grows:

rain-rot-infographic

To treat Rain Rot, you must remove all the bumps and scabs from the animal. Then clean the animal thoroughly. We recommend Shapely’s MTG. This product not only helps to kill the bacteria but it helps the coat regrow, healthier and stronger than ever.

After you clean your animal, dont forget to clean all your tools, brushes and even saddle pads and turnout blankets. The cleaner they are the less likelihood of re-contamination.

Rain Rot is not a fun thing to have or to treat, so the easiest way to treat it is to prevent it. Make sure that not only is your horse clean, but that he/she has a dry place to hangout. You horse will love you once you use Shapely’s MTG on them.

No Thrush, No Problem.

IF
Heel Crack (what you want to fix)

Just because you can’t smell it, doesn’t mean it’s not there. Heel cracks are the secret enemy, they are unhealed remains of the ravages of thrush. They hold the bacteria deep inside causing other issues, and starting the thrush cycle all over again. The heels should be smooth and firm with a dimple not squishy with a crack. See the image to the right to compare your horses hooves.

Heel Cracks can be fixed. Luckily for us there is a wide variety of treatments and products we can purchase for our four-legged friends.

IF
No Thrush Powder being applied to a heel crack.

No Thrush is the first dry thrush treatment available. No more staining clothes or stinky fluids to mess with. Here is a video on why and how to apply the No Thrush dry powder to your horse.

No Thrush ® attacks the bacteria that cause thrush and related fungal infections with a combination of naturally occurring mineral salts that do not burn or harm the tender areas of the hoof.

What’s a Tradeshow?

In our last blog post we stated that we went to a tradeshow to bring you new products. Many asked; What is a tradeshow? What do you do there? So we decided to answer that for you.

Many different distributors will hold semi-annual or annual conventions and shows to promote their current and new vendors. At these shows, retailers (that’s us!) will choose one or a couple employees to represent their company.  The representatives will then go visit and make connections with the vendors. Looking for new product to bring into the stores.

When we find a product that we think you as a consumer would love, we do some research and we are in the best spot for it. The supplier, maker and sometimes owner of the product and company will be there. This is the best opportunity to ask questions and really get to know if the product is a good fit. Most suppliers will have physical samples of the product there, so we as a buyer can hold it, test it and examine it before purchasing. This helps us make the hard decisions of what to bring into the store.

Once all of the orders are made and the vendors are talked to, we as a buyer sit back and wait on our end to receive the new goodies. While we wait, we will re-examine our placement of products and possibly move items to make room for the new ones. For our most current trade show, we made an end-cap become our showcase for all the new and exciting items.

Only some of our new products!

We are always looking for new products to bring into the store, so if you or someone you know has a product that you think will do great, bring in a sample and talk to the gals at the retail counter! We will love to see what you guys have!
